Infill plays an important role in the longevity of artificial (synthetic) turf. The infill will gradually disappear from your field as it is carried off by equipment tires, athletes, wind, rain, and drainage. On average, athletes and coaches can carry off two to three pounds of infill material during a playing season. Without proper infill support, the turf fibers will break off prematurely. By maintaining the proper amount of infill material, you can minimize the amount of turf fiber breakdown and increase the longevity of your field.

A routine maintenance program is crucial to maintaining a safe playing field. Debris such as dirt, bird droppings, gum, blood, skin, and sunflower seeds accumulate extremely fast on an artificial turf field and often get overlooked or unforeseen. Debris can create safety hazards due to increased field hardness and the proliferation of bacteria, mold, fungi, and insects.

Over time your turf will have wear spots. Turf fields wear just like natural turf, except that you can’t just throw seed of sod down to fill a patchy area. Athletes in all sports players can destroy a seam or crease in as little as one year if the turf is not maintained. The infill material gradually gets moved or shuffled out, and then the fibers break off quickly without the support of the infill material.
